What to Expect at Your Free Trial Lesson
October 1, 2026
Booking a free trial lesson is the easiest way to see what private instruction at Houston Conservatory of Music feels like before enrolling. There's no commitment involved. It's simply a chance for a new student and teacher to meet, get a feel for each other's style, and talk through goals for the instrument.
On the day of the lesson, families arrive at our studio at 550 Heights Blvd, Unit A, in the Houston Heights. New students don't need to bring anything prepared; teachers meet each student where they are, whether that's a complete beginner holding an instrument for the first time or someone returning to lessons after time away.
After the trial lesson, our team follows up to answer any questions about scheduling, tuition, and next steps. If it feels like the right fit, enrolling is simple. If it's not quite right, there's no pressure to continue. You can book a free trial lesson any time through our website.
Choosing Your Child's First Instrument
September 17, 2026
One of the most common questions we hear from parents is which instrument to start with. There's no single right answer. The best first instrument is usually the one that keeps a student curious and motivated to practice. At Houston Conservatory of Music, we teach piano, violin, viola, cello, guitar, voice, bass, and more, so families have real options to explore.
Piano is a popular starting point because it lays out music visually, letting students see pitch and harmony laid out in front of them, which builds a strong foundation in reading music and understanding theory. Violin, by contrast, asks a young student to develop pitch by ear and build physical coordination early on, which some children take to naturally and find especially rewarding.
Age, attention span, and a child's own interest matter as much as the instrument itself. A free trial lesson is a low pressure way to find out how a student responds to a particular instrument and teacher before committing to a plan.
Private Lessons vs. Weekend Group Classes: What's Right for Your Family?
September 2, 2026
Houston Conservatory of Music's membership plans combine weekly private lessons with weekend group classes, and families often ask how the two fit together. Private lessons are one-on-one time with a teacher, focused entirely on an individual student's technique, repertoire, and pace. This is where the bulk of technical progress happens.
Group classes, held on weekends, give students a different kind of experience: playing and learning alongside peers, building ensemble skills, music theory, and the simple confidence that comes from performing with others. They're included with membership and organized by age and level, from Music & Movement for our youngest students to Vocal Ensemble and Music Ensemble for more advanced players.
Most families get the most out of both together, using private lessons to build individual skill and group classes to put it into practice socially. You can see current plans and pricing on our Membership Plans page.
